Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use natural, underground warmth from the earth to heat pipes that can in turn be used to regulate temperature in a building, heat water, or produce electricity. GSHPs require little operational maintenance and are heavily incentivized by the IRA. These systems are best suited for new builds.
